OFFBEAT ISLAND

About me

Here’s a brief intro of who I am and why I started this little hobby of mine – organizing group travel, that is.

I’m Kristi Keller, I'm a single mom and have a full time, professional career aside from my obsession for travel.  I had never been outside North America until 2003, when I won a trip to Negril, Jamaica through a local radio station.  I went on this short 5 day excursion and immediately fell in love with the country.  As soon as I arrived home I bought another ticket to go back 2 months later….and the rest is history.  I’ve gone back several times now and my life has been consumed with learning as much as possible about the island they call JamRock, its people, music and culture.

When I’m not dreaming of jetting off to the island, I’m actively involved in several other Jamaican organizations.  I’ve been an annual volunteer for the Calgary Reggae Festival Society since its inception; I’ve moderated a Jamaican chat forum for the past 4 years, take Caribbean dance classes regularly, attend or volunteer for several other Jamaican or Caribbean festivals and events around the city.  I’ve also met several “online” acquaintances who share my love for Jamaica, by traveling to different locations throughout North America and Jamaica.  I wouldn’t trade this portion of my life for anything.

I have traveled alone, with friends, and with my son and have been there enough times that I’ve established friend and family-like bonds with so many people around the island.  It got to the point where I was tired of telling and showing everyone pictures about it.  Now I just want to bring everyone with me!  Hence this website and the trips I’m organizing.  I’m NOT a travel agent nor in the travel “industry”, I just get to go, take people with me and share what I know with who I know, strictly for the pleasure of it all!  Does it get any better?

The main focus of my trips is “native Jamaica”.  I whole heartedly think that if you buy into an All-Inclusive package through a travel company, you’re less likely to leave that resort because you paid good money to be there, therefore much less likely to experience any culture at all.  You’re lucky if you even get to try varieties of local food and drink.  So with the groups I’m taking I am focused on designing the trip with everything local in mind….from food, tours, events, and venues.  And I’ve done it so that you only pay one price too…leave the hassle to someone else and keep the tourist dollars where they belong….with the locals.
